During the day, Samantha Montgomery works in an old people’s home in New Orleans and is just about able to keep a roof over her head. In the evening, the flamboyant 30-something transforms herself on her YouTube channel into Princess Shaw and sings her own songs for a few dozen followers. At the same time in a kibbutz in Israel: artist Kutiman is scouring the web for new material for his mash-ups. He’s built up a reputation sampling clips of unknown musicians and reusing them in artistic arrangements. For him, Princess Shaw is a sensation. At first, he makes her the centrepiece of a composition and turns her into a YouTube star. With affection and humour, the film shows how these two cultures collide – the result is the story of a modern-day Cinderella.
Ido Haar graduated from the Sam Spiegel Film & Television School in Jerusalem and first worked as an editor. His directorial debut was in 2004 with the autobiographical documentary Melting Siberia, a film about his father who once had an important position in the Russian Red Army.
