Story
Ray (Elle Fanning) lives in a house in New York with his mother Maggie (Naomi Watts) and his lesbian grandmother Dolly (Susan Sarandon). He was born Ramona, but has always known he was actually a boy. Now the time has come for him to finally accept his true identity and undergo a sex change operation. Maggie is worried, but supports him. Dolly (Susan Sarandon) adores Ray, but is having difficulty accepting the idea of having a grandson rather than a granddaughter. That leaves his Dad Craig (Tate Donovan) who left the family when Ray was a young child. Ray’s treatment cannot begin without his signature. Reluctantly, Maggie has to start looking for her ex, a process that will bring not only existential changes to her life… Three Generations is an enchanting tragicomedy, witty, warm-hearted and intelligent about a modern family that has to reinvent itself.
