Synopse

In her third feature film, Shahrbanoo Sadat attempts the impossible: she directs a romantic comedy set in Afghanistan. The acclaimed Berlinale opening film is a powerful yet entertaining portrait of women in a thoroughly patriarchal society. Shahrbanoo Sadat not only takes on the lead role, but also weaves autobiographical references into this genre blend that is as precise as it is daring. Naru works as a camerawoman in television and has learnt to rely on no one but herself. Caught between the hustle and bustle of the newsroom and the custody battle over her young son, Naru keeps everyone at arm’s length – especially men. For this divorced woman, one thing is certain: there are no good men. But when, of all people, she has to work with a star reporter – the pair racing across the city in search of the next big story whilst trading barbs – Naru’s firm conviction begins to waver noticeably.

Regie

Shahrbanoo Sadat is an Afghan film director who has been living and working in Hamburg since fleeing Afghanistan. She made her name with her feature films Wolf and Sheep (2016) and The Orphanage (2019). No Good Men opened this year’s Berlinale.
