Content Notes & Parental Guidance
As already introduced two years ago at the MICHEL Children and Youth Film Festival, this year’s FILMFEST HAMBURG program also includes so-called content notes for the first time.
Content notes, also known as trigger warnings, mark sensitive content in the films that is necessary to partially preserve the art behind the film or to make it the political statement it is intended to be. This content can trigger strong emotional and physical reactions in people. By making this list available online and on demand at the festival box offices, visitors can decide independently and freely, depending on their personal needs, whether to attend the film program for their own safety and well-being.
The list compiled by FILMFEST HAMBURG by no means claims to represent all possible triggers or to have marked all films in their completeness – it forms a cross-section of the triggers we are aware of, an attempt at the totality and is therefore constantly updated and adapted.
The topics we have identified are
Abortion
Alcohol and drug abuse
Anti-Semitism and racism
Discrimination against FLINTA, LGBTQIA*+
Eating disorder / vomiting
Experience of flight and/or war
Violence against animals
graphic sexual content
bullying
physical violence
psychological violence
sexual assault or rape
suicide or assault
You can find a complete list of related films here.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE (PG) ACCOMPANIED BY PARENTS
The Youth Protection Act (§11 para. 2 JuSchG) allows children from 6 years of age to attend films with an FSK rating from 12 years of age in cinemas if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Since 01 May 2021, this rule also applies if the children are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
In concrete terms, this means according to §1 para. 1 p. 4 JuSchG: Parents may entrust any adult person with the task of educating their children, for example adult siblings, aunts or uncles, parents who are friends, teachers, instructors, etc.
Please note: All films in this year’s programme have been given an FSK (Voluntary Self-Regulation of the Film Industry) rating. Parents or persons responsible for education should be aware of the FSK age rating of the film. They can inform themselves in advance and read notes on sensitive film content.
