FilmFest Hamburg continues its Deep Dive series, with the second instalment focusing on production design. On 29 September 2026, Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer gave an insight at KINOPOLIS into their long-standing creative partnership and the design of the cinematic world of Barbie. The creative duo, who have been nominated for seven Oscars, explained their different areas of responsibility and vividly demonstrated how production design and set decoration intertwine: from the initial visual concepts, through the selection of materials and colour schemes, to the actual staging of a set.

When the invisible becomes audible – sound as a storytelling element: With DEEP DIVE SOUND, FILMFEST HAMBURG dedicates an exclusive event to this essential art form, diving into the world of sound and exploring the question: How do aliens sound in an emotional, psychological science-fiction universe? Oscar-winning sound designer Sylvain Bellemare created the soundscape for Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival (2016). In an in-depth conversation, illustrated with specific film clips, he demonstrated how sound is brought to life in cinema and offered a deep, personal insight into his creative process.
