Synopse

Poetry in the chaos of war and displacement: an autobiographical music drama by Congolese director Rafiki Fariala pulses with rhythmical resilience. A debut film that thrills and encourages. Bangui, the Central African Republic. 17-year old Robert fled the civil war in Congo and dreams of life as a musician. Because his parents were arrested while they were fleeing, he has to take care of his four younger siblings. Robert juggles odd jobs and the preparation for his school-leaving exams, while at the same time avoiding the militias terrorizing the city. One day, he hears of a music competition and dreams of winning it as his only hope.

Regie

Rafiki Fariala left Congo as a child and went to the Central African Republic, where his parents had sought refuge. Parallel to studying economics in Bangui, he made the documentary We, Students!, which was shown in 2022 at the Berlinale and won several international prizes. This year, FilmFest Hamburg will present him with the Albert Wiederspiel Award.
