What is Love

OT: What is Love

Ruth Mader // Austria, 2012
Documentary Feature // FF2022

DOCUMENTARY What makes a good life? Five sensitive, documentary miniatures shows different models of how to gear up for life and love. A doctor living alone, a patchwork family, a vicar preying, a female worker on a night shift, a couple who own a forest: five lives at the start of the 21st century, five attempts to fill the arc between birth and death with sense, five times normalcy, in which success, happiness and desolation lie close together.

RUTH MADER (*1974 in Vienna) studied direction and won the Max Ophüls Prize for her short film Gfrasta in 1999. Her debut feature Struggle won her an invitation to Cannes in 2003, her documentary What Is Love premiered in 2012 at the Berlinale. In 2017, FILMFEST HAMBURG showed her second feature film Life Guidance. SERVIAM – Ich will dienen had already won the Screenplay Prize in 2005 at the Diagonale and ran in competition this year at the Locarno Film Festival.
