Story
HYBRID At the gates of Kolkata, old film footage is given a new purpose. In the village of Daspada, hundreds of toys are produced every day: rattles, whistles, windmills, all made by hand. The raw material is old strips of film, detritus from the archives of Bollywood. It’s not so much the pictures that are used by the workers, more the material and the clicking sound that the strips of film make. Medial relicts are thus recycled to toys and given a new purpose. With her documentary, Yashaswini Raghunandan adds another level to the process and in the context of a solar eclipse interweaves fictional elements to give it a fairy tale-like quality.
