Story
The Romania portrayed by director Calin Peter Netzer is a society full of doubt, a twilight zone caught between the blackness of the totalitarian regime it has overcome and the glittering fantasies of the liberalism it hopes to embrace. Maria lives with her seven children in the basementof a decrepit house. Her alcoholic husband loses his job, then drinks away the last of their savings before getting arrested, leaving Maria alone with the children. Her only chance of survival is to turn to prostitution.
