Story

Manderlay is the second instalment of the trilogy that started with “Dogville”. The story is set in the 1930s in the American town of Manderlay, Alabama. Grace is the daughter of a white gangster and is engaged in the fight against racial segregation. Von Trier’s star-studded ensemble performs against a backdrop of sketched scenery, with few props and no music. Lars von Trier was supported by his now legendary production company Zentropa. Founded in 1992, the company took the film-world by storm with its “Dogma” series and has now become the biggest production company in Scandinavia, having produced more than 50 films. This year’s Douglas-Sirk-Award goes to Zentropa Productions.

Director

In 1995, LARS VON TRIER (*1956) was a co-initiator of the Dogma manifesto which left its mark on European cinema. His uncompromising films have often caused scandals. The House that Jack Built is no exception, with its premiere ending in uproar at Cannes.
