“It wasn’t meant to be.” The sentence describing so many relationships that fail before they’ve really begun also applies to director Ham Chun-su and artist Yoon Hee-jung. He’s in Suwon for a film showing and meets Hee-jung in a free few minutes. She recognizes him as a well-known director and the pair spend the day together. They visit her studio, eat sushi, drink soju and in the evening go out with Hee-jung’s girlfriends. The pair grow steadily closer – and yet in the end everything goes wrong. But what exactly? This is the question that director Hong Sang-soo pursues in his playful romance – and so he has it begin again, albeit under slightly altered circumstances.

Hong Sangsoo (*1960) is one of 198's best-known directors – and one of the most prolific. Since 1996,he has made 18 features and won many awards. FILMFEST HAMBURG howed his Locarnowinner Right Now, Wrong Then in 2015 and Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors in 2000.
