Story

The most hotly disputed film at this year’s Cannes Festival, “Dogville” is set in a small town in the Rocky Mountains during the Depression. Nicole Kidman plays the part of Grace, a mysterious stranger on the run from the mob and granted leave by the townsfolk to hide there for a fortnight. But as the pursuit of Grace intensifies, so too does the townspeople’s cruelty towards her. Shot entirely in a sparse studio setting with a minimum of props, and with a host of stars past and present (Lauren Bacall, Stellan Skarsgard), Lars von Trier has here reduced film to its most essential elements.

Director

In 1995, LARS VON TRIER (*1956) was a co-initiator of the Dogma manifesto which left its mark on European cinema. His uncompromising films have often caused scandals. The House that Jack Built is no exception, with its premiere ending in uproar at Cannes.
