Story
With her huge eyes, thin lips, mask-like face and her slim, boyish figure, Asta Nielsen was the first big screen diva. She starred in 74 films from 1920 to 1932. This documentary shows archive footage from various periods in her life (she died in 1972), affording a glimpse of her private life which remained screened off from public view. This included her “salon” in her Berlin apartment for the intelligentsia of the day, such as Thomas Mann and the Einsteins. Director Torben Skjødt Jensen also has a previously unknown gem – Asta Nielsen’s voice, in recorded phone conversations with her friend, Frede Smith, an antiquarian bookseller in Copenhagen.
