Synopsis
Living with a sentence of death: a boy grows up with a curse and is treated in his village like a leper. Shortly after his birth, Muzamil and his parents are confronted with a fateful prophecy: an Islamic dervish foretells that the boy will die at 20. The father then leaves the family. Muzamil is brought up by his mother, who cares for but also overprotects the boy. The villagers avoid the cursed child, also because they see no point in having a relationship with someone who’s going to die soon anyway. Then Muzamil turns 19.
Bio
AMJAD ABU ALALA (*1980) has Sudanese roots and studied media in the United Arab Emirates. He made several shorts that were shown at international festivals. You Will Die at Twenty is his debut feature and was to a great extent financed by European sources.
