HYBRID In 1992, it wasn’t just the Olympic flame burning in Spain: a film that reawakens a forgotten past and plays with the conventions of the documentary film. 500 years after the founding of its colonial empire and 15 years on from the first free elections after Franco, Spain wanted to present itself as a modern nation. Luis Lopez Carrasco remembers a very different 1992: when protests against the closure of a tobacco factory escalated. In a typical bar, witnesses of the events meet to smoke, drink and discuss: class consciousness and trades unions, the current crisis and the Franco years, yesterday and the future.

LUIS LOPEZ CARRASCO (*1981) is a filmmaker, author and visual artist. In 2008, he co-founded the film collective Los Hijos. The Year of the Discovery is his second long film as sole director and has won numerous prizes.
