Synopse

God exists. He lives in Brüssel and is a monster (Benoît Poelvoorde). He bullies his wife (Yolande Moreau) and his daughter (Pili Groyne) with his moodiness and bad-tempered outbursts. And he takes a sadistic pleasure in spoiling people's days. In his control centre, he controls his bad deeds: a telephone that rings just when you've made yourself comfortable in the bath. Or it starts raining when you've left your brolly at home. When God's in a bad mood – and that's most of the time – then everybody should suffer too. That's divine law. Ea, his 10-year old daughter, can't stand it any longer. She secretly hacks her Dad's PC, on which all human data is stored, and sends every inhabitant of Earth a note telling them their date of death. It doesn't take long before chaos reigns. The Brand New Testament is a highly amusing film about a heavenly generational conflict – with a simply divine Catherine Deneuve as a female apostle.

Regie

JACO VAN DORMAEL(*1957) was awarded the Caméra d‘Or for his debut film Toto le Héros (1991) in Cannes. Other films of his include Le Huitième Jour and Mr. Nobody. The Brand New Testament is his fourth feature. Despite the relatively small number of films, Van Dormael is one of Belgium's most important directors.
