Synopse
The first herrings of the season are known in the Netherlands as "Hollandse Nieuwe". They are a popular snack, celebrated every year with their own festival. For the Dutch herring fishermen, however, there is little to celebrate. Only two ships still fly the Dutch flag. With long takes and impressive imagery, Raw Herring observes the exhausting work of the last herring fishers. A film about the slow end of a 1000-year old tradition and the hunt for a national symbol which even Queen Beatrix no longer sees as exclusively Dutch.
