Synopse

This Peking has nothing to do with the capital of China. It refers to a quarter in the Polish industrial town of Katowice in Upper Silesia. Its inhabitants refer to it as"Miracle Quarter". It consists of derelict apartment blocks, home to the poorest of the poor, gypsies and the unemployed. Some have been re-housed to the quarter after failing to pay their rent elsewhere – "the damned", as they call themselves. Everyday life is marked by alcoholism and despair. This half-hour film draws an unadorned picture of the inhabitants' struggle for survival.
