Synopse
Early summer in a remote village in Northern Turkey. Lale and her four sisters are on their way home from school and stop off to play with some boys in the sea. This allegedly immoral behaviour causes a scandal – with unforeseen consequences: little by little the family home is transformed into a prison. Housework replaces schoolwork, marriages are arranged. But the sisters' longing for freedom is enormous and won't be suppressed. They refuse to let themselves simply be locked up. Mustang is a wonderfully defiant plea against an arch-conservative patriarchy and in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs section of the Cannes film festival won the Europa Cinemas award.
Regie
Deniz Gamze Ergüven studied history and then film at the La fémis school in Paris. Her graduate work Bir Damla Su (2006) was shown at numerous festivals and won prizes, including in Locarno. Mustang is her full-length debut.
