Synopse
Nikolaus (Lars Eidinger) is heir to the 33n throne, Mathilde (Michalina Olszanska) a world-famous ballerina. The two have a fleeting affair which then turns into a passionate romance – much to the disapproval of the court. When Nikolaus' father dies, the son realizes that his freedom to love whom he pleases is at an end. And indeed, the official period of mourning is not yet over when the tsar's widow prepares the marriage between Tsar Nikolaus and Princess Alix von Hessen-Darmstadt. Amid settings of incredible opulence, the historical drama portrays a real love story that became a legend.

ALEXEY UCHITEL (*1951) started out at the Leningrad documentary studio before turning to feature films. He became known internationally with Progulka [The Stroll] (2003) and Plennyy [Captive] (2008).
