Synopse

With her first English-language production, Pia Marais returns to S Africa. Layla Fourie is a gripping thriller about a country between suspicion and paranoia, where the traces of apartheid are still to be found. Layla lives with her young son in Johannesburg and has fought hard to get a job in a security company specializing in lie detectors. On the way to her new job in a distant casino resort, she accidentally runs someone over. For fear of the consequences, she gets rid of the body. When she meets Eugene at her new job, she doesn’t know that he is the son of the accident victim. But with the burgeoning love affair, Layla is in ever greater danger of being found out.


Regie

PIA MARAIS (*1971 in Johannesburg) grew up in South Africa and Sweden and studied Film at the German TV and Film Academy in Berlin. Her debut Die Unerzogenen (2007) won several awards, including the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival, while Layla Fourie (2013) got an Honourable Mention at the Berlinale. In 2010, FILMFEST HAMBURG showed her film Im Alter von Ellen.
