Synopse

A widow dances away her pain in this heart-warming tragicomedy. A film full of music and magic realism, temperament and depth, which won the Best Director award at Sundance. Haru and her man Luis love taking part in Tokyo’s dance competitions. After Luis’ tragic death, Haru has to come to terms with a life without her soulmate and increasingly withdraws from society. In her grief, she is helped by the belief that Luis is still with her – in the shape of a crow that visits her at night. When her sister and cousin finally manage to lure her out of her isolation, Haru rekindles her love for the rumba. Soon, she and her new partner are making sparks fly.

"Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! is a homage to my mother. She’s 81, has had a pretty tough life and still enjoys ballroom dancing. Of course the film isn’t autobiographical, but my mother’s elan, her temperament, her chutzpah and her courage were strong inspirations for the character. And Rinko Kikuchi, who plays Haru, embodied her wonderfully. It was incredibly to work with her and see how she became the role." (Josef Kubota Wladyka)

Regie

Josef Kubota Wladyka has a Japanese mother and a Polish father and won an MFA at the New York University. After Manos sucias (2014) and Catch the Fair One (2021), Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! is his third feature.
