Synopse

Mexico in the 16th century. By order of Hérnan Cortés, the later conqueror of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, three Spanish conquistadors make their way to the summit of the volcano Popocatepetl, which is of great strategic importance for the next part of the campaign. They are led by Diego de Ordaz, a feverish psychopath, driven by personal ambition, the prospect of posterity and an unshakeable religious conviction. The ascent is difficult and exhausting and the men feel tiny in the face of this majestic mountain. And with every metre they climb, their doubts as to their mission and the conquest of the New World grow. The film records the physical battle with the volcano with almost documentary directness and reflects both the inner and outer dramas.
