Synopse

Jacques Audiard’s new film is a great show full of vitality and energy that sears all the senses and celebrates cinema with a rare passion. Emilia Pérez won the Jury Prize at Cannes. The female ensemble with Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and Karla Sofía Gascón were also awarded the Prize for Best Female Performance. Lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) is a small player in a big company: overqualified, but underrepresented. Thanks to her intelligence, drug dealers, murderers and gang bosses have walked free. The credit is always taken after the event by her corruptible boss. One day, a way out offers itself: gang boss Manitas del Monte (Karla Sofía Gascón) wants to escape the mafia world. The lawyer should draw a line under his dubious life’s work and organize a new life for him and his wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) and their children. Then she should carry out a plan he has been preparing for years: his complete transformation to the woman he was always been on the inside – Emilia Pérez. But Manitas' past is a story with its own rules, a story that will not let go and that will take its bloody revenge.

JACQUES AUDIARD (*1952 in France) is one of the most important voices in contemporary French cinema. He became known through award-winning films like Un Prophète (2009) and De Rouille et D’Os (2012). In 2015, FILMFEST HAMBURG showed his Golden Palm-winning Dheepan and in 2021 Les Olympiades, Paris 13e.
