Synopse
Michèle (Isabelle Huppert) and a friend have a video game company. She has everything under control, is hard as nails and ruthlessly efficient. This doesn't change even after a masked man forces his way in to her villa in the Paris suburbs and rapes her. Michèle doesn't tell the police and only mentions it casually to friends at dinner. She has no intention of slipping into the role of victim. Quite the opposite. When she finds the man and identifies him, she forces him to play a sadistic game that could get out of control any minute. A woman stands up to male domination and violence and empowers herself: With nuance and unpredictability, Isabelle Huppert combines her character's cold-bloodedness and icy matter-of-factness with wicked humour. Elle was shown in competition at Cannes and is Paul Verhoeven's celebrated comeback, at the same time both disquieting and very entertaining.
