Synopse
The overcrowded "Carandiru" prison with its 7000 prisoners is slap bang in the centre of São Paulo. In a series of episodes loosely linked by the figure of the prison doctor, Drauzio (Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos), Hector Babenco shows an apocalyptic world where prisoners live according to their own rules. Based on the records kept by prison doctor Drauzio Varela, the film shows the events leading up to the killing of 111 prisoners in 1992. With over 4 million viewers in its home country, "Carandiru" is the most successful Brazilian film of all time.
