Synopse

Marcos and his wife need money quickly, so they kidnap their neighbour's baby. But the child dies and Marcos doesn't know what to do. He confides in Anna, the young daughter of a general for whom he works as a chauffeur. Bored with her life, Anna secretly works nights as a prostitute in an exclusive brothel. A bizarre sexual dependence develops between Marcos und Anna. She sleeps with him and tries to control him. When Marcos decides to turn himself in, his wife urges him to first purge his sins with a pilgrimage to the Virgin of Guadalupe. For Marcos, it's the last journey he will make. Battle In Heaven is both provocative and poetic and its explicit sex scenes caused a scandal at Cannes.

Regie

Carlos Reygadas (*1971) studierte Jura und arbeitete für das mexikanische Außenministerium, ehe er zum Kino kam. Heute zählt er zu den mutigsten und intellektuellsten Regisseuren Lateinamerikas, dessen Filme regelmäßig in Cannes gezeigt werden. Für Japón (FILMFEST HAMBURG 002) erhielt er in Cannes die Caméra d’Or, für Stellet Licht 2007 den Preis der Jury.
