Synopse
A strong feminist manifesto combining the genres Western and Body Horror: Animale portrays a young woman trying to find her place in a world dominated by men and in doing so skilfully playing with the metaphor of the beast. The Camargue is famed for its traditional bull-fights. Here, 22-year old Nejma is training for an upcoming competition, the only woman among many men. The season is well underway when the news of a stray bull terrifies the local community. Young men are dying brutally, but the beast is nowhere to be found.

EMMA BENESTAN (*1988 in France) is a French-Algerian director. Her romantic comedy Fragile (2021) was well received by the critics. In 2021, she made the documentary Fearless Girl about the bull-fighter Marie Segrétier.
