Synopse

DOCUMENTARY Is the female view in cinema more ruthless? A search for traces among iconic directors, newcomers and radical pioneers. »Women make tougher films.« This sentence from cult director Kira Muratova to the young film-maker Isa Willinger at the start of her career haunted her. How can that be, given that »female« is seen as synonymous with “empathetic” and »sensitive«? In No Mercy, Willinger sets out on a journey to different female directors, including Ana Lily Amirpour, Catherine Breillat, Virginie Despentes, Alice Diop, Monika Treut, Julia Ducournau and Céline Sciamma. It becomes clear that the cinema screen is a projection surface for real social problems and balances of power. The question posed by the film is a deep one: Where do we stand today on women, men and power?

To accompany the film NO MERCY, the Metropolis Cinema will be showing selected films by the filmmakers portrayed in the film from November 2025 to May 2026. The films will be presented by Hamburg film mentors from the cultural scene. Information about the programme will be available from October at www.metropoliskino.de.
