Synopse
The debut feature of French director Louise Courvoisier is a delightful tragicomedy about love, country life in all its beauty – and harshness – and the pitfalls in trying to make good cheese. Totone is young, feisty, easy-going. His favourite activities are hanging out with his mates, dancing and flirting. Until reality catches up with him. Suddenly, he has to take responsibility for his little sister and his parents’ delipidated farm in the French Jura. To generate enough money to live, he comes up with a plan: he wants to make prize-winning Comté cheese. Each year the winner gets a gold medal – and €30,000. Totone is supported by his friends, his sister and the young farmer Marie-Lise – whose cows give the best milk in the region.
Without resorting to kitsch but with great empathy for the wonderful characters, Könige des Sommers gives an authentic picture of life in the French Jura.
The film won the Prix de la Jeunesse in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.
