Synopse

Ancient palazzi alongside abandoned building sites, a pubescent girl in the bigoted provinces: Alice Rohrwacher has already found her setting and sound in her directorial debut. 13-year old Marta returns to Italy with her family after 10 years in Switzerland. But her home in Italy’s deep South, where the Church’s omnipresence influences the inhabitants’ everyday life, is foreign to her. As she prepares for her confirmation, she feels the first signs of doubt as to whether the path she has prayed for is really as universally valid as everyone thinks. From a critical distance, Martha observes the Catholic rituals and begins in small steps to take her life in her own hands.

Regie

ALICE ROHRWACHER (*1981 in Italy) grew up as the daughter of an Italian teacher and a German beekeeper in Tuscany and studied literature and philosophy, followed by screenplay writing in Turin. All of her four films to date have had their premieres at Cannes.
