Synopse

In this partially autobiographical coming-of-age drama, James Gray sketches an America dominated by racism, inequality and deep-seated prejudice. New York, 1980: Paul is the youngest member of a well-to-do Jewish family. But with his permanently busy mother Esther (Anne Hathaway), his caring but strict father Irving and his argumentative brother Ted, he often feels lonely. Only his loving grandfather Aaron (Anthony Hopkins) seems to really understand him. At the start of a new school year, Paul meets Jonathan, who is black and lives in humble circumstances with his sick grandmother. The two boys quickly become friends and Paul soon becomes aware of the endemic social inequality.
