Synopse

After nine years, a new film from Leos Carax. A musical melodrama about a love affair, showbiz and a child star which is a cinematic event, excessive and poignant. Present-day Los Angeles. Henry (Adam Driver) is a stand-up comedian with a ruthless wit. His shows are shocking, Henry lays bare the spiritual abyss of his soul and seeks to achieve loss of control. Ann is a well-known opera singer, with perfectly judged pathos and adoring fans. Henry and Ann make a glamorous couple and live in a villa on the edge of the city. Their love affair is a rapture, together they ride their motorcycle into the Californian sunset. Then their first child is born – Annette, a secretive girl with an unusual gift which will change her parents’ lives.

Annette is the first English-speaking film by Leos Carax and opened this year’s Cannes festival. The idea and the music came from the American band Sparks. »Ever since I’ve been making films, I’ve dreamt of making a musical. I had imagined The Lovers on the Bridge as a musical. I came into contact with Russell and Ron Mael from Sparks after Holy Motors. In one scene, Denis Lavant listens to 'How Are You Getting Home?' from the Sparks album 'Indiscreet'. So they knew I was a fan of their music.« (Leos Carax)
