Synopse

In the streets of Bogotá, a teenager struggles with the demands of his macho surroundings. Sensitive and subtle, this queer coming-of-age drama explores Latin American ideas of masculinity. Carlos is 16 and lives in a youth facility in the centre of Bogotá. It’s Christmas and the boy is looking forward to spending the holidays with his mother and sisters. When he leaves the centre, he is confronted with the brutal machismo of his neighbourhood. To survive, Carlos has to prove that he can stand up to the league of alpha leaders. But his desire for recognition collides with other, contradictory feelings inside him.

Regie

Besides working as a director, FABIÁN HERNÁNDEZ (*1985 in Bogotá) also teaches direction and screenplay writing at state schools in Bogotá. A Male is his debut feature and premiered in the section Semaine de la Critique at Cannes.
