Double joy in Los Angeles: The Secret Agent was named Best Foreign Language Film, and lead actor Wagner Moura received the award for Best Actor in a Drama.

The Secret Agent celebrated its German premiere at FILMFEST HAMBURG. Kleber Mendonça Filho was the 2025 ‘Filmmaker in Focus’ and personally presented this film and two earlier works in Hamburg.

In The Secret Agent, Marcelo (Wagner Moura) returns to the coastal city of Recife in 1977 during the exuberant carnival week in São Paulo. There he hopes to see his son again. But his arrival doesn’t go unnoticed – amid the celebrating crowds and omnipresent violence, Marcelo becomes entangled in an ever-tightening web of surveillance, corruption and mistrust from which there is no escape. What begins as a personal journey develops into a dangerous game in the shadow of the military dictatorship.
