Synopse
Sensitively, but with razor-sharp precision, in their new film the Dardennes brothers accompany five teenage mothers. An episodically structured social drama that echoes the pair’s early documentaries and puts the individual destinies in a larger social context. Five young women – Jessica, Perla, Julie, Naïma and Ariane – live together in a home for single mothers. Each of them has had a difficult past, marked by poverty, family conflicts and social obstacles. But, despite the challenging circumstances, they share a common dream: to enable their children to have a better life. In doing so, they struggle not only against outside resistance, but also with their own personal demons – and the question as to how they as young mothers can survive in an often ruthless society.
»Every story is shaped to suit the individual teenage mother and her child, both inside and outside the home. What connects them is the early motherhood, which is connected to the social determination of poverty and certain emotional deficits. These can lead to similar behaviours being repeated from generation to generation. This is where they try and break free and reveal themselves as unique, alive and individual. In a sense, they cease being figures – and become people«. (Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne)
