Synopse
The president is expecting a cake for his 50th birthday. A captivating, sensitive Iraqi film about the odyssey of an 11-year old girl from the Mesopotamian marshland. As his people struggle to survive war and food shortages in 1990s Iraq, President Sadam Hussein demands a birthday cake from every school in the country. To her horror, 9-year old Lamia is chosen by her teacher to fulfil this task. To acquire the ingredients for the recipe, the penniless child sets out for the nearest town – accompanied by a cockerel, the cunning little boy next door and her Gran, who has her own, secret agenda.

HASAN HADI grew up in Southern Iraq and has worked in journalism, in production and as a lecturer in the NYU Graduate Film Program. The President’s Cake is his debut feature and won the Audience Prize in the »Quinzaine des Réalisateurs« section at Cannes and the Caméra d'Or for Best Debut.
