Synopse
DOCUMENTARY In a dilapidated spa resort on the Black Se, hope is the best medicine. The Kuyalnyk Sanatorium near Odessa was once a prestige project of the Soviet health system. Today it is a place of crumbling plaster, but the patients still come – fewer than in the past, but with all the more longing for a cure. They bathe in the salt-water lake, take black mud packs and hope for miracles against impotence and illness. While war rages round the corner, Gar O'Rourke documents a summer full of human resilience in a community that refuses to give up, full of humour and melancholy.

GAR O'ROURKE is a prize-winning director from Ireland, whose audiovisual work ranges from documentaries to commercials to art films. Sanatorium is his first full-length documentary.
