Synopse

In his debut film, Kleber Mendonça Filho reveals the paranoia in the feudal system behind the facades of the Brazilian middle class. A biting comedy, which turns into an ominously shimmering social drama. In a block of flats in the coastal city of Recife, everything is as usual: a housewife is trying to get a dog to stop barking, a housekeeper is enjoying an affair with a security man and a porter is fired for sleeping on the job. When one day a private security firm turns up, the atmosphere in the community changes. The presence of the men brings a sense of safety, while at the same time upsetting the precarious balance between the various different layers.

Regie

KLEBER MENDONÇA FILHO began his career as a film critic, before he turned to directing. His debut film Neighbouring Sounds (2012) was Brazil’s entry for the Oscars. In 2016 came the award-winning drama Aquarius and in 2019 Bacurau won the jury prize at Cannes. The Secret Agent (2025) also won awards there: Best Direction and the Acting Prize for Wagner Moura.
