Synopse

Italy’s cinematic maestro Paolo Sorrentino presents the finale of a term of office of a fictitious president as a chamber piece between levity and a sense of responsibility. Mariano De Santis is President of Italy. The widowed Catholic has a daughter called Dorotea, who followed in her father’s footsteps and became a jurist. As his period in office nears its end, there are just two tasks left to complete: he must take a decision on two controversial pleas for clemency. Here he faces a moral dilemma that seems to be irrevocably connected to his private life. Tormented by doubts, he must make a choice – and this remarkably Italian president will do so out of a deep sense of responsibility.

Born in Naples, PAOLO SORRENTINO is one of the best-known directors in Europe. His film Grande Bellezza – Die große Schönheit won the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film in 2014. FILMFEST HAMBURG showed his films Loro (2018) and Die Hand Gottes (2021). La Grazia opened the Biennale in Venice.
