Synopse

DOCUMENTARY »We’re doctors, not bureaucrats!«: in the face of political resistance, an Italian clinic offers its patients space for their own personal autonomy. Dr. Bini is about to retire. If he’s not picking mushrooms in the forests of Lombardy, then he’s helping people in a Milan hospital live the way they would like to. Protected from the loud public controversies about family planning treatments and gender transition, here they find specialist and emotional support for their concerns. While Italy’s right-wing government tries to impede his work, Dr. Bini follows only his humanistic compass.

Born in Italy, GIANLUCA MATARRESE works as a director in Paris. His work explores the interfaces between medical, ethical and cultural questions. GEN_ had its premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
