Unorthodox is a four-part Netflix original series created and written by Anna Winger (Deutschland83/86/89) & Alexa Karolinski (Oma & Bella), directed by Maria Schrader (Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe) and inspired by Deborah Feldman's book of the same name. It tells the story of a young woman from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Esther "Esty" Shapiro lives under the strict rules of a Hasidic community. One day she breaks out of her arranged marriage and travels to Berlin to find herself. Unorthodox was the first German series ever to win an Emmy award and was nominated in 8 catagories.
