Yeo Min is a Korean boy who lives with his family in a small mountain village. Although only nine years old, he already carries quite a heavy load of responsibilities on his slim shoulders. He is spokesman and leader of a swarm of children, class captain, mediator, advisor and an admired wrestler. Nobody seriously questions his position as chief, even his challenger Black Bird has to learn this the hard way. He has everything thought through meticulously, has always the answers and solves any problem swiftly. Only his wish to get his partially sighted mother the sunglasses which she needs so urgently gnaws at him violently. Yeo Min is aware of the fact that he is no longer a child due to all the things he already knows about life. When Woo-rim, a girl from the far-off Seoul with a rather inconsistent behaviour, moves into the village, she turns his view of life and his emotions upside down... ‘When I Turned Nine’ comments vividly on formative phases such as one’s schooldays, friendship, jealousy, first love and family.
