11-year old Skunk lives with her father and brother in a British suburb.  When she hears how Rick, a mentally retarded boy, is beaten up, suddenly her home, neighbourhood and school are no longer the protected places they were.  The security of her childhood is replaced by fear.  She finds refuge in an unspoken friendship with Rick and ends up facing a most wonderful choice of actions.  All the strands of this episodic story come together in the person of Skunk, a phenomenal debut performance by Eloïse Lawrence.
