Jafar Panahi

Films by JAFAR PANAHI (*1960) have won many awards, including The Mirror (1997), The Circle (2000) and Offside (2006) making him one of Iran's most important independent film-makers. Because of his criticism of the regime, most of his films are not shown in Iran. The Accordion (2010), This Is not a Film (2011) and Closed Curtain (2013) have all been shown at Filmfest Hamburg.

Jafar Panahi was sentenced to six years in jail and banned from filmmaking for 20 years by the Iranian government – the appeal is hanging. This film, which is accounting for the precarious situation of the director with its title, is less a provocation than an attempt on Panahi's side to gain creative energy from his desperation. Sitting in front of the digital camera of his colleague Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, Panahi develops an exciting improvisation about his work and life.
