1939: Walerian Wrobel just reached 16 years of age, as the German occupying might , forces him to leave is homeland poland, his family and his beloved farm. He is forced to slave labor at a farm near the northern city of Bremen. Walerian is getting homesick very quickly, since he receives a very uncompassionate treatment from the owners. He decides to burn one of the barns, in the naive assumption, that the authorities will send him home. His hope is dashed, when he ends up in in the Neuengamme concentration camp, awaiting trial for sabotage against the fatherland.
