Kirill (Yuri Nazarov) is a Russian meteorologist stationed in Safedobi, a small village in the Central Asian nation of Tajikstan. Kirill is waiting for the day he can hand his duties over to Nilufar (Nashiba Sharipova). Just as things seem poised for Kirill to go back to Russia and Nilufar to take his place, the Soviet Union begins to crumble and Russian troops, establishing new borders in Tajikstan, divide Safedobi in two. Now Nilufar lives on one side of the new divide and her husband to be lives on the other. How can Nilufar marry the man she loves now that fate has put them in separate nations just a few feet apart?
