When the migrant worker Xu returns to his home province, he learns that his 14-year old daughter Ying is pregnant. The father is allegedly a teacher. But neither the police enquiries nor Xu’s own furious efforts nor the investigation by a reporter from the city lead to a single truth. The deeper they get into the story, the more indistinct correlations become, as an apparently unambiguous overall picture disintegrates. The film itself rejects unambiguousness and performs a confusing game of changing perspectives on the part of the protagonists, both of the world and of each other.
