Bruno Dumont

With his films L’Humanité (1999) and Flanders (2006), BRUNO DUMONT (*1958) won the Jury Prize at Cannes. In 2017, he had already made a film about the French national icon: Jeannette – L’Enfance de Jeanne d'Arc.

The demythologisation of an icon: Bruno Dumont tells the story of the life and death of Jeanne D’Arc as an idiosyncratic biopic that veers from musical to psychological action film. France, 1430: Jeanne’s fall from grace has begun. At the head of the King’s army, she is defeated at Compiègne, trusted allies abandon her, intrigues are spun – until finally the young woman is taken prisoner, brought before a Church court and condemned to death as a heretic. The film splits Jeanne’s final phase of life into two parts, the battle and the trial, and tells the story in an extremely stylised manner – as epic theatre about the end of a woman who later became a saint and national hero.
