During the soaring economic and social optimism in China at the end of the 1990s, five pupils finish their schooling in the provinces. Their plans for the future are in part vague and dreamy, in part concrete and with clear aims: should they go to university or stay in their villages, live out their artistic ambitions or earn money, follow the wishes of their parents or those in their hearts? In his debut feature, Zhu Hang has made an allegorical coming-of-age story, which interweaves the romantic possibilities involved in growing up with surreal sequences and in the end creates a memorial to those who fell by the wayside.
